Janet Jackson’s classic 1986 album CONTROL was her commercial breakthrough and a highly influential document of modern R&B and the ‘new jack swing’ style it helped originate. More importantly, it was a representation of Jackson’s newfound independence. She was free from her cocaine-addicted ex-husband and had severed ties with her monstrous manager and father, Joe. Both her music and business moves would inspire countless future female artists to get theirs by managing their own affairs. The titular track is specifically about Janet’s desire to take back command of her music, her career, and her life. She vows to not stop until she gets what she wants. Be like Janet.
